My name is Lisa Maloney. I’m a travel and outdoors writer based in Anchorage, Alaska, and author of the award-winning travel guidebook Moon Alaska. I’ve lived in Alaska for more than 30 years and written hundreds of newspaper columns, magazine articles and online stories about exploring this grand state.

I’ve also written two guidebooks about hiking in Alaska, each of which have won awards in their own right. You can learn about them, and get an ever-growing range of trail information, “how to” articles and outdoors news, at my website Hiking Alaska.

In short, I know Alaska. You can read my bio, view my portfolio, and learn more about me at my central website, Maloney Writes. But for now, let’s talk about this site.

Come to Alaska

I typically update Moon Alaska every two to three years but, as you might imagine, things can change quite a bit within that time frame — especially in the smaller communities that are such a quintessential part of the true Alaska experience. And of course things are changing even more quickly and drastically nowadays, thanks to the COVID-19 pandemic.

With that in mind, I created this website to publish updated information in between editions of my guidebook, and to highlight tours, destinations and experiences that I think you might particularly enjoy.

Whether you’re planning to visit Alaska now or in the future, my intention is to develop this website into a one-stop shop for all the information you need to plan your trip. Please check back frequently for updated community profiles, reviews of popular activities, packing lists, updates on local festivals, and more.

Even During COVID-19?

During the COVID-19 pandemic, my goal is also to provide a one-stop source for the latest information on what it takes to travel to Alaska — please see the COVID-19 menu tab for the latest updates. I hope this information will be helpful but, because things are changing so quickly and unpredictably, I encourage you to stay in close contact with the local companies you plan to visit, so they can clue you in to their individual circumstances and policies.

How to Get in Touch

I welcome your questions, comments and feedback. I’m also human so, although I pay close attention to detail, it’s possible a mistake will creep in here or there. If you see something that you think should be changed, or have a suggestion for future content, please get in touch using this fancy contact form and I’ll respond as soon as I can.
